02 / The design

Your face setsthe proportions.

A smile is designed to the face it belongs to, not chosen from a catalogue.

Your lips, your midline and the way your teeth show when you talk set the proportions. The design is drawn over your own photograph, so every decision is made against your face rather than against a model.

You see it as a 2D simulation on screen, and nothing moves forward until it is the smile you want.

The lines a smile is set to.

Five things are decided before a shape is chosen. They are what makes a designed smile read as yours rather than as dentistry.

01Facial midlineThe centre of your face, which the centre of the teeth is set to.
02The smile lineThe edges of the upper teeth follow the curve of the lower lip.
03ProportionThe width of each tooth against its neighbour, counted out from the middle.
04The gum lineWhere the gum sits on each tooth, and how evenly it reads across the smile.
05LengthHow long a tooth is, and how much of it shows when the lips are at rest.
