Veneers, Bonding or Clear Aligners: Which One Fits Your Smile?

Veneers, composite bonding and clear aligners solve different problems. A simple guide to what each one changes, what it cannot, and how to choose.

Veneers, bonding and clear aligners often get discussed as if they were rivals for the same job. They are not. Each one solves a different problem, and the quickest way to choose is to ask what is actually bothering you about your smile.

Start with one question: position or surface?

  • If the problem is where your teeth sit, such as crowding, gaps or teeth that have drifted, the tool is clear aligners. They move the teeth.
  • If the problem is the tooth itself, such as its shape, size, length or colour, the tools are bonding and veneers. They reshape and recolour what you already have, but they do not move it.

Veneers can sometimes disguise mild crowding, but they change how a tooth looks, not where it sits in the jaw. Moving teeth is the job of aligners.

The three side by side

Clear aligners Composite bonding Porcelain veneers
What it changes The position of your teeth The shape, size or colour of a tooth, built up in tooth-coloured resin The shape, length, size and colour of the front teeth, with thin porcelain shells
Often chosen for Crowding, gaps, teeth that have shifted Small chips, small gaps, minor shape changes Larger changes in shape and colour, or several teeth at once
Visits Few visits, spread over several months; the length depends on your case Often a single appointment Typically two to three visits over one to two weeks
Tooth preparation None; small tooth-coloured attachments are added where needed Little or none Usually some
Afterwards Usually a retainer, to hold the result Can be repaired or polished Cared for like natural teeth; preparation cannot be undone

The details vary from person to person, and your own plan sets the number of visits. Our pages on clear aligners, composite bonding and porcelain veneers go into each in detail.

If your teeth are crowded or spaced

This is a job for aligners. They straighten the teeth gradually, and a retainer afterwards usually keeps them where they are. At Mineers, the aligners are Fixaligner®, planned from a 3D scan of your teeth and 3D printed here at the clinic. How long treatment takes depends on how far the teeth have to move (How Long Does Clear Aligner Treatment Take?), and whether you are a good candidate is covered in Clear Aligners for Adults.

If a tooth is chipped, small, uneven or stained

This is where bonding and veneers compete, and the difference is one of scale.

Bonding suits smaller changes: closing a small gap, repairing a chip, evening an edge. It is often done in one appointment, with little or no removal of enamel, and it can be repaired later. Veneers suit larger changes: a different shape, length or shade across several teeth. Porcelain resists stains well and is made in a laboratory for each tooth, but it usually needs some preparation of the tooth and takes more visits. We compare the two in detail in Porcelain Veneers vs Composite Bonding.

Often the answer is a combination

Many smiles need more than one thing, in a sensible order:

  1. Healthy gums first. Gum inflammation affects every cosmetic treatment (Gum Health and Cosmetic Dentistry).
  2. Aligners to move the teeth into position.
  3. Whitening, if a lighter shade is wanted, before any shade is matched.
  4. Bonding or veneers to refine shape and colour, once the teeth are where they should be.

For a smile that shows a lot of gum, reshaping the gum line (crown lengthening) can be part of the plan too. Starting with aligners can also mean less to correct with veneers later, because the teeth are already well placed.

Three questions to ask yourself

  1. When I look at my smile, is it the position of my teeth or their look that bothers me?
  2. Do I want a small refinement, or a bigger change in shape and shade?
  3. How do I feel about time, and about any preparation of my own teeth?

How the decision is made at Mineers

We do not choose from a list. We photograph your face, scan your teeth in 3D and draw the smile on screen, so that you can see what each option would change (What Is Digital Smile Design?). For veneers, a printed mock-up called Testineers lets you wear the design before any tooth is prepared. Sometimes the right answer is a simpler treatment than the one you came in thinking about, and sometimes it is none. Our smile design page shows the process.
