Why Two Veneer Quotes Can Look So Different (And What to Compare)

Same treatment name, different quote? What shapes the cost of a veneers smile: how many teeth, the material, preparation, lab work and planning.

You ask two clinics about veneers and the quotes come back very different. Both say "porcelain veneers". It is natural to wonder which one is right, or whether one of them has made a mistake.

Usually neither has. A veneers quote is not the price of a product on a shelf. It is an estimate for a plan, and two plans with the same name can describe quite different treatments. This article explains what sits behind the number, so you can compare like with like. There are no prices in it on purpose: the only figure that matters is the one written for your own teeth, after an examination.

What goes into a veneers quote

How many teeth are treated

A veneers smile is rarely just "the front teeth". Some smiles are designed on six teeth, others on eight or ten, depending on how wide you smile and which teeth show when you do. A quote for six teeth and a quote for ten are not comparable, even when both are called a veneers smile. Ask exactly which teeth are included, and why those ones.

The material

"Veneer" covers more than one thing. Porcelain and ceramic veneers are made in a laboratory and bonded to the tooth; they differ in strength, translucency and how they are produced. A composite veneer, built up directly on the tooth in the chair, is closer to bonding and is usually a lighter treatment with a different lifespan. We compare the two in Porcelain Veneers vs Composite Bonding. If two quotes use different materials, they are quotes for different treatments.

How much of the tooth needs preparing

Some teeth need very little reshaping. Others, such as teeth that are rotated, darker or set forward, need more before a veneer can sit well. The amount of preparation changes the planning and the laboratory work, and it is one of the things that cannot be judged properly from a photograph. Ask how much preparation your own teeth are expected to need, and how that will be decided.

The laboratory work

Every veneer is made for one tooth: its shade, its translucency, its surface texture and its place in your smile. Ask who makes your veneers, how they are finished, and how many adjustments are normal before they are bonded. The more individual the work, the more time it takes, and that shows up in a quote.

Planning and preview

Some clinics start with an impression and a shade guide. Others design the smile first. At Mineers, we photograph your face, scan your teeth, and draw the design on screen (What Is Digital Smile Design?). Then we print a mock-up of the design, which we call Testineers, so that you can wear it and see it in the mirror before any tooth is prepared. A plan that includes a preview has extra steps in it, and that is one reason quotes differ.

Your gums, your bite and your existing dental work

Veneers sit on top of what is already there. Gum inflammation, a bite that grinds, old fillings or crowded teeth may need attention first, because they affect how well veneers last (Gum Health and Cosmetic Dentistry, The Role of Bite Alignment). A quote that assumes none of this can change once your mouth has been examined.

What happens afterwards

Ask what follow-up is included, whether a night guard is recommended for you, and what happens if a veneer chips. A quote that ends on the day the veneers are bonded is not the same as one that includes the weeks after.

Why a quote from a photo is an estimate

Photographs are a good starting point. They show the shape and position of your teeth, your smile line and your colour, and they let a dentist suggest what might suit you and roughly how many visits it would take. They cannot show the inside of your mouth: decay under old fillings, the health of your gums, the way your teeth meet. So a quote given from photographs is an estimate that the examination then confirms or adjusts. If a quote is fixed before anyone has looked at your teeth in person, ask what could change it.

Seven questions to ask when you compare quotes

  1. Which teeth exactly are included, and why those?
  2. What are the veneers made of?
  3. Will I see a preview of the design, and try it on, before any tooth is prepared?
  4. How much preparation do you expect my teeth to need?
  5. Who makes the veneers, and how many visits will it take?
  6. Is any gum, bite or other treatment needed first, and is it in the quote?
  7. What follow-up is included afterwards?

A quote that answers all seven is easier to trust, whatever its number.

What we suggest

Send us a few clear photos of your smile on WhatsApp and tell us what you would like to change. Our team can tell you what is likely to suit you and how many visits it would take, and then we confirm the plan at a consultation, with a 3D scan and a digital design you can see on screen. Not sure how to take the photos? How to Send a Photo of Your Smile shows which ones help.

Before your visit, How to Prepare for Your First Veneer Consultation is a useful read, and our porcelain veneers page shows the process step by step.
